A phlebotomist is someone who is in charge of drawing blood from veins of patients. You will need a certification in phlebotomy if you wish to have a career in this field. Before you go for a certification, you must understand that as a good Phlebotomist,
* You should know reasonably well about human anatomy and human blood. * You should be able to connect with doctors and nurses. * You must be empathetic towards patients. * You should have the ability to draw blood form young and older patents, connect with them and generate a feeling of trust. * You should know the finer nuances of drawing blood from different kinds of veins and various other techniques. * Attention to details is a key requirement. * You will need to be good at record keeping and labeling.
If you believe that you have all the above competencies, then you can easily work as Phlebotomists. The only thing you will need is now a Phlebotomy certificate. To get a Certificate of competence in phlebotomy, you will need to complete a fixed number of hours of theory sessions, practical demo sessions and internship at some clinic. Phlebotomy training schools provide adequate course work that students get to sharpen all the above listed skills. Phlebotomy technician schools provide training on advance equipments and impart knowledge about modern techniques being researched in Venipuncture and Cannulation also.
Most Phlebotomy tech schools require their students to have a high school certificate. Some may even require work experience before joining the programme.
While working a Phlebotomist, you will be one of the first few people to meet patient, so your observations are vital. While you are taking blood samples, you will have to be careful while puncture, insertion of needle, collecting sample and labeling. Incorrect label on blood sample may ruin a life, so you will have to be very careful. Sometimes, you may encounter complications and emergency situations while drawing blood samples of right after that. In such cases, you need to keep your cool and let your training take over you not the panic.
