The Les Paul Gibson guitar was originally produced in 1952 largely due to the massive success of Telecaster released by rival manufacturer Fender in 1950. The Fender Telecaster created a huge interest in electric guitars, realizing that this was the future of the industry the Gibson Guitar Company jumped into the business of building electric guitars. Oddly the company that would become famous for the Gibson Les Paul guitar initially turned down the designs that Les Paul presented to them because they thought there was no future in electric guitars.

The Gibson Guitar Company had been founded by Orville Gibson in 1894 originally to sell his newly designed mandolin. The company was successful but Orville Gibson didn’t survive to the see the real success of his company dying in 1918. It was during the 1920’s that the company really took off when they added guitars and banjos to their product line. Gibson quickly established themselves as one of the great innovators in guitar design and actually produced the world’s first successful electric guitar however the company never really put a lot of effort into their electric guitars at this time.

Les Paul was a well known musician at the time who during the 1940s had started to experiment with designing his own electric guitar ultimately building a guitar called the Log. Paul then approached the Gibson Guitar Company about selling his guitar but Gibson showed no interest at the time. A few years later however the company came to the realization that having a famous musician like Paul endorse their guitar would help sales and the Gibson Les Paul was born.

Oddly the Les Paul Gibson was not the guitar that had been designed by the famous musician it was actually designed by Gibson president Ted McCartney, who didn’t even know how to play the guitar. Gibson was more interested in Les Paul for his name rather than for the guitar that he designed. The only real contribution that Les Paul actually made to the guitar that bears his name was to choose the colour. He chose gold apparently because it made the guitar look more expensive.

Although originally intended to come in two models the regular and the custom the Les Paul Gibson proved to be such a huge success that the company soon greatly expanded the line up. Soon there were Gibson Les Paul guitars to cover every segment of the market and at every price range except for the absolute beginner.

The Les Paul Gibson guitar sold well throughout the fifties but by the nineteen sixties they were being soundly outsold by the rival Fender Stratocaster, mainly the result of the high price of the Les Paul. As a result in 1961 the company redesigned the guitar; unfortunately they did this without bothering to tell Les Paul. When he saw the new guitar he asked that his name be removed from the guitar. The company complied with his request and for most of the sixties there were no more Gibson Les Paul guitars being produced.

As a result of the Les Paul Gibson going out of production in the sixties the value of the original guitars soared as they became a hot collector item. Many musicians chose to use the Gibson Les Paul during the sixties but since none were being produced they had to pay a high price to buy used ones. Even during the sixties the original Les Paul’s were selling for tens of thousands of dollars. Nowadays a Les Paul Gibson from the fifties in good condition will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is in large part a reflection of how few of them were built.

In the late sixties Gibson Guitar Company came under new ownership and seeing how much the original Gibson Les Paul guitars were selling for the company decided to put them back into production. The first of the new Les Paul Gibson’s hit the market in 1968. These new guitars were altered significantly from the originals but they sold well nevertheless. Since then the Les Paul has remained in production with many different models being sold. In addition the company has produced a number of custom models over the years. There have also been a large number of imitators of the Les Paul Gibson; this should come as no surprise given that it is one of the most innovative guitars ever built.

The Gibson company had been producing guitars for a long time, including the first successful electric guitar before they started production of the Les Paul. The company’s early electric guitars were hollow guitars but when Fender introduced the Telecaster in 1950 they changed the game. With a successful solid guitar now on the market Gibson realized they needed to build one as well. At the same time legendary musician Les Paul had been experimenting with designing his own solid body electric guitar. It was just a matter of time before he and Gibson crossed paths.

The odd thing about the Les Paul Custom is that it is not the guitar that Paul designed. In the early fifties when Gibson were looking to bring a solid body electric guitar to market Les Paul contacted them about producing the guitar he had designed. The company wasn’t interested, mainly because they were already working on their own design. Although the Gibson Custom wasn’t actually designed by Les Paul they recognized the value of having his name on their guitars and they entered into an agreement to produce the Gibson Les Paul.

The Gibson Les Paul Custom is actually the second version of the guitar, the original known as the regular version went into production in 1952. The company soon realized that they needed an upgraded version for the higher end market so in 1954 they offered the improved version as the Gibson Les Paul Custom. The guitar sold well until a dispute between Les Paul and Gibson in 1961 resulted in Paul asking to have his name removed from the guitars. The dispute was actually over the redesign of the standard model but it resulted in Paul severing all ties with the company.

In a lot of ways having the Custom go out of production in 1961 was the best thing that could have happened to the company. With the guitars now hard to come by they became a hotly pursued item amongst professional musicians as well as a hot collectors item. During the sixties the Gibson Les Paul Custom was the guitar to have, it was a status symbol and everybody wanted one. Not surprisingly it was just a matter of time before Paul and Gibson settled their differences and put the Custom back into production, which happened in 1968.

The Gibson Les Paul Custom has remained in production continuously since 1968 and although there have been a few changes along the way it remains more or less the guitar that started the Les Paul legend. Most of the changes  have been to make sure that the guitar keeps up with changes in technology. At its core however the Les Paul Custom remains the same guitar it has always been.

The Les Paul Standard is one of the most classic electric guitars in the world. It is the guitar that started the legend of Les Paul guitars. Although not the first Les Paul produced by Gibson it is far and away their best selling version. In reality the Standard was just the original version given a different paint job so from a stand point of performance the Gibson Standard is really the same guitar that has been produced from the beginning.

The collaboration between Gibson and Les Paul began in 1950 when the company realized they were losing in the electric guitar market to the Fender Telecaster. The irony is that although the guitars bear the name of the legendary musician he played virtually no part in the design. In fact Les Paul had designed his own electric guitar and tried to get Gibson to produce it but they weren’t interested. Instead they arranged a deal to put the Les Paul name on the guitar they had designed. The result was the original Les Paul released in 1952.

The Les Paul Standard went into production in 1958 when the company changed the finish to a gold colour. This became the guitar that most people associate with the Les Paul name. Despite its success the guitar was only produced for three years. This was because in 1961 Gibson redesigned the guitar and never bothered to tell Paul. He didn’t like the guitar and asked that his name be taken off of it. The reason for the redesign was that the company was again losing sales to rival Fender this time their Stratocaster model. Realizing that the issues were price and weight Gibson changed the design to address these issues. Although Les Paul took his name off of the guitar it continued to be produced as the Gibson SG which sold well and remains in production to this day.

In the original production run there were only two thousand Gibson Standard guitars produced and they soon became collectors items. Even in the sixties people were paying tens of thousands of dollars for them, today prices will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact the Les Paul Standard guitars that were produced in the first run between 1958 and 1960 sell for significantly more than the early versions of the guitar. This is largely because the Standard become so widely used by some of the most famous musicians in the world. This made the Les Paul the guitar to have for the serious player and it remains so to this day.

As the classic Les Paul Standard was becoming very  popular with many of the sixties top musicians it was clear to the company that they had to put it back into production. In 1968 the Gibson Standard went back into production and has remained a top seller for the company ever since. Les Paul, the famous guitar and Jazz player, whose name is still coming from all over world, is a great person who holds special name in music record. He was born as Lester William Polfuss and in the year 1915. At the age of eight, he started playing harmonica. Then he progressed to banjo and then last to guitar. It was guitar with, which he was associated till his last. Later on at the age of thirteen, he started playing country music at professional level.
